TAYLOR OWYNNS – FUNERAL CELEBRANT

As a Celebrant it’s so important to me, when meeting with a family, writing the service and on the day actually delivering that service to really reflect the one whose life we’re celebrating in a personal way. I don’t like to pretend to have known the person but rather to speak about them so that all their friends and family feel that the essence and personality of the one they knew is truly reflected.

When people come up to me after the service to ask how long I had known the deceased I know I’ve done my job well…and after all, it’s the least anyone can do to ensure that a human life, which is no small matter, is treated with dignity and respect and above all with love.

I always send a bound copy of the service to the family after the Funeral Service so that they have a record of the words spoken, the Eulogy provided by the family member or friend who has written it and any poems read so that they have a record and a keepsake. This can be a comfort to re-read when the overwhelming emotions of the day have subsided and they can review the life of their loved one at a quieter time.

Over the years I’ve been very privileged to have been invited into many people’s homes and into their lives at a time of great challenge and inevitably of great sorrow.

I never cease to be amazed by the stories that each person has to tell, usually of courage and humour expressed in simple, human ways that are not necessarily great acts on the world stage but are no less profound in their effect on the lives around them, however long or short a time they were able to spend with us.

Those whom I have been privileged to know through my Celebrancy work, are my inspiring teachers and I consider it a gift to have the opportunity to be part of their lives in celebration!
